Flu vaccination reduces the risk of influenza, serious illness and complications. At Tartaczna 2 Medical Centre in Gdańsk, we provide flu vaccinations for adults and children following an assessment of their suitability.
Flu viruses change, and protection from vaccination gradually decreases. A vaccine with a composition matched to current recommendations is therefore advised each season. Influenza can cause complications such as pneumonia and can worsen existing long-term conditions.
Flu vaccination does not prevent every cold or all respiratory infections. Its effectiveness depends partly on how well the vaccine matches circulating viruses, as well as the person's age and health.
Ideally, arrange vaccination before flu activity increases. If you missed vaccination in autumn, you can still benefit from having it later while influenza viruses are circulating. Protection does not develop immediately after the injection.
In Poland, annual vaccination is recommended from 6 months of age when there are no contraindications. It is particularly important for older people, pregnant women, people with long-term conditions and those in close contact with them.
Adults usually need one dose per season. The number of doses for a child depends on their age and vaccination history; a second dose may be needed when a child is vaccinated for the first time. Please provide your child's age when booking so we can confirm whether vaccination can be arranged and whether a suitable vaccine is available.
An inactivated flu vaccine can be given in any trimester of pregnancy. Vaccination helps protect the mother, and antibodies transferred through the placenta provide the baby with some protection during the first months of life. The live nasal spray vaccine is not used during pregnancy.
Bring details of previous vaccinations and your medicines. Tell the clinician about any previous severe allergic reactions and any current infection. You do not need to fast for vaccination alone. An acute illness with a fever may mean the appointment needs to be postponed.
Possible side effects include a sore arm, redness, feeling unwell or a short-lived fever. An inactivated vaccine cannot cause flu. Remain at the centre for the observation period recommended by staff.
