You can visit the Breast Clinic whenever:
- you feel a lump or thickening in your breast,
- you notice redness or a change in the shape of your breast,

Any new breast lump or other concerning change should be assessed by a doctor, even if it is not painful.
The first step in diagnosis is an appropriately selected breast imaging examination – most commonly ultrasound and/or mammography, depending on age, symptoms and previous test results.

Breast Imaging
The first step is usually an appropriately selected imaging examination. In many cases, this will be a breast ultrasound performed by a radiologist.

Specialist Consultation
The results can be discussed with a surgical oncologist or oncologist. The doctor assesses the lesion and decides whether observation, additional imaging or a biopsy is required.

Biopsy
Depending on the characteristics of the lesion, we perform:
- fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB),
- core needle biopsy (CNB),
- vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (VAB),
- lymph node biopsy,
- excisional biopsy.

Pathology Examination
Material collected during a biopsy is assessed by a pathologist using cytological or histopathological examination.

Review of Results
After receiving the result, the patient can discuss further management with a surgical oncologist or oncologist. The clinic also offers tissue marker placement before oncological treatment and assistance with documentation required for the Oncotype DX test.

Natalia Spychalska, MD, is a specialist in surgical oncology. She completed her specialist training at the Department of Surgical Oncology with a Breast, Skin and Soft Tissue Tumour Unit at the Gdynia Oncology Centre. She is involved in the diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases, including benign lesions, cysts, inflammatory conditions and breast tumours. At Centrum Medyczne Tartaczna 2, she consults patients with breast conditions, performs biopsies and carries out procedures to remove benign breast lesions.

Jakub Morawiec, MD, is a radiologist with extensive experience in breast imaging. He worked in Sweden for eight years, where from 2017 he was involved in comprehensive breast diagnostics in a one-stop model, including mammography, breast ultrasound and, when indicated, biopsy within the same diagnostic pathway. He has experience in performing ultrasound-guided breast biopsies and holds the European Diploma in Radiology (EDiR). At Centrum Medyczne Tartaczna 2, he performs breast ultrasound examinations as well as breast and lymph node biopsies.

Magdalena E. Korożan, MD, PhD, is a specialist in clinical oncology and radiation oncology. Since 2004, she has been involved in the diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases, including both malignant tumours and benign breast conditions. She has extensive experience in systemic oncological treatment and radiotherapy and is a member of the multidisciplinary tumour board at the 7th Naval Hospital in Gdańsk. She is also involved in molecular diagnostics and in assessing indications for germline genetic testing for hereditary cancer predisposition.

Artur Antolak, MD, PhD
Pathologist | Cytological and Histopathological Diagnostics
Artur Antolak, MD, PhD, is a specialist in pathology with extensive experience in cytological and histopathological diagnostics. He is the head of the ALAB Plus Pathology Laboratory at the Ministry of Interior and Administration Hospital in Gdańsk. He is involved in the diagnosis of pathological lesions, performs fine-needle aspiration biopsies, and evaluates cytological and histopathological specimens used in cancer diagnostics.
What Tests Should I Have Before Seeing an Oncologist or Surgical Oncologist?
- Before a consultation with an oncologist or surgical oncologist, the most important step is to have appropriate breast imaging performed. In many cases, this will include a breast ultrasound.
- If the doctor decides that additional breast imaging is required, the patient will receive appropriate recommendations during the consultation.
- Breast ultrasound may also be useful if mammography has already been performed and has shown a breast lump or another suspicious finding, such as microcalcifications.
Why Is Breast Ultrasound So Important?
- helps detect breast lesions in younger women, in whom some abnormalities may not be visible on mammography,
- allows accurate assessment of the size and characteristics of a breast lesion, which helps guide further diagnostic and treatment decisions,
- includes assessment of the axillary lymph nodes and, when indicated, the supraclavicular and infraclavicular lymph nodes, which are not routinely assessed on mammography,
- allows visualisation of breast lesions and lymph nodes before ultrasound-guided biopsy procedures.
Who Should Perform a Breast Ultrasound?
Radiologists are specialists trained in breast imaging, including ultrasound examination of the breasts and regional lymph nodes. Breast ultrasound may also be performed by doctors from other specialties, such as gynaecologists or internists, provided they have appropriate experience in breast diagnostics. When choosing where to have a breast ultrasound, make sure that the doctor:
- has appropriate experience and knowledge in breast imaging,
- provides a written report,
- classifies the findings using the BI-RADS system,
- provides image documentation of any detected lesion.
If no written report or image documentation is provided and the patient is only verbally reassured that everything is normal, the examination should be repeated by a radiologist.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Please bring:
- reports and results from previous examinations,
- images or CDs from breast ultrasound, mammography and MRI,
- results of any previous biopsies,
- documentation from previous treatment,
- a list of medications you are currently taking,
- information about any family history of breast or ovarian cancer.
