Breast Core Needle Biopsy (CNB)

A breast core needle biopsy (CNB) is performed to obtain small tissue samples from a breast lump, breast tumour or other breast lesion for histopathological examination. Histopathology helps determine whether the sampled tissue is benign, malignant or shows other pathological changes. During the procedure, small cores of tissue are collected using a special biopsy needle through a minimal skin incision. Usually several tissue samples are obtained, which may require several needle passes. Core needle biopsy provides tissue for detailed histopathological assessment and is considerably more informative than fine-needle aspiration biopsy when breast cancer is suspected.

BI-RADS Classification and Breast Core Needle Biopsy

If breast ultrasound, mammography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reveals a suspicious breast lesion classified as BI-RADS 4 or BI-RADS 5, and in selected cases BI-RADS 3, a core needle biopsy may be recommended. The procedure is most commonly performed under ultrasound guidance. Ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy is one of the standard diagnostic methods used for suspicious breast lesions and suspected breast cancer, as it provides tissue for detailed histopathological and biological assessment of the tumour.

Management of BI-RADS 3 lesions is selected individually depending on the imaging characteristics of the lesion and the patient's risk factors. In BI-RADS 4 and BI-RADS 5 lesions, tissue sampling for histopathological examination is generally required, most commonly by core needle biopsy or, in appropriate cases, vacuum-assisted breast biopsy.

At our Medical Centre, we perform the main types of breast biopsy. Breast biopsies are performed by surgical oncologists and by radiologist Dr Jakub Morawiec. Cytological and histopathological specimens are assessed by a specialist pathologist.

Pathological Examination of Breast Tumours – Cytology and Histopathology

The nature of a breast tumour or other breast lesion can be assessed either by cytological examination, which evaluates individual cells obtained for example by fine-needle aspiration biopsy, or by histopathological examination of tissue obtained through a core needle biopsy, vacuum-assisted breast biopsy, surgical tissue sampling or complete excision of the lesion. Histopathological assessment of tissue provides detailed information about the nature of the breast lesion and is essential for establishing a definitive diagnosis when breast cancer is suspected.

Based on current medical knowledge, clinical experience and international recommendations, tissue sampling for histopathological examination is recommended when indicated by the clinical and imaging findings, particularly in suspicious solid breast lesions. Pathological assessment is an integral part of the diagnostic process for suspicious breast tumours and is essential for establishing a definitive diagnosis of malignancy. All biopsy specimens, tissue samples and surgically removed lesions obtained at our Medical Centre are submitted for appropriate pathological examination. Cytological and histopathological specimens are evaluated by a specialist pathologist.
