RSV vaccination helps reduce the risk of lower respiratory tract illness caused by respiratory syncytial virus. At Tartaczna 2 Medical Centre in Gdańsk, we provide vaccination for adults and pregnant women following an assessment and selection of a suitable vaccine.

What is RSV, and who is at risk?

RSV is a virus that infects the respiratory tract. It can cause cold-like symptoms, but may lead to serious illness in babies and older adults. People with long-term conditions or a weakened immune system also have a greater risk of complications. A previous infection does not provide lasting protection against further infections.

RSV vaccination for adults

Vaccination is particularly worth discussing in older age and when a condition increases the risk of severe infection, including:

• chronic lung disease, including COPD and asthma,
• heart disease, particularly heart failure,
• diabetes and other significant long-term conditions,
• a weakened immune system due to illness or treatment.

Eligibility depends on age, health and the licensed indications of the particular vaccine. The aim is primarily to reduce the risk of more serious illness and hospital admission; vaccination does not guarantee that every infection will be prevented.

When can I have an RSV vaccine during pregnancy?

Maternal vaccination is intended to protect the baby during the first months after birth. The mother produces antibodies that cross the placenta and provide the baby with passive protection.

The vaccine licensed for use during pregnancy can be given at 24–36 weeks; Polish experts recommend 32–36 weeks as the optimal period. The doctor also considers the due date, RSV season and the woman's individual circumstances. Not every RSV vaccine is suitable for use during pregnancy.

If you had an RSV vaccine during a previous pregnancy, mention this at your consultation. Protection for a baby in a subsequent pregnancy should be planned according to current recommendations.

Are babies vaccinated against RSV?

RSV prevention for babies may involve protection from maternal vaccination or the administration of ready-made monoclonal antibodies to the baby. An antibody injection is not a vaccine. The choice depends on the baby's age, health and previous preventive measures, and should be discussed with a paediatrician or neonatologist.

How many RSV vaccine doses are needed?

Adults receive one intramuscular dose. RSV vaccination is not routinely repeated every year. The need for further doses is reviewed as new evidence and recommendations become available. If you have already been vaccinated, bring details of the date and vaccine used.

Adults can arrange vaccination before the RSV season. During pregnancy, staying within the recommended gestational window and agreeing the timing with the doctor managing the pregnancy are particularly important.

Preparation and possible side effects

Tell the clinician about long-term conditions, medicines, previous vaccinations and allergic reactions. If you are pregnant, provide your current week of pregnancy and estimated due date. You do not need to fast for vaccination alone. An acute illness with a fever may require postponement.

A sore arm, tiredness, a headache, muscle aches or sometimes a fever may occur afterwards. The clinician will explain contraindications and possible side effects of the chosen vaccine, and advise how long to remain for observation.
