Abdominal ultrasound

Abdominal ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging examination that helps assess internal organs and investigate symptoms. At Tartaczna 2 Medical Centre in Gdańsk, scans are performed by radiologist Dr Ewa Kołyszko. The examination uses sound waves and does not expose you to X-rays.

Which organs can an abdominal ultrasound assess?

The doctor primarily examines the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and abdominal aorta. Depending on the scope of the examination and image quality, the urinary bladder and selected pelvic and retroperitoneal structures may also be assessed.

Ultrasound can help identify stones, cysts, enlarged organs, some focal lesions and fluid in the abdomen. Not every organ can always be seen in full. Bowel gas and body build can limit the view, particularly of the pancreas and deeper structures.

When might you need an abdominal ultrasound?

• Recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort under the right ribs.
• Suspected gallstones or certain urinary tract conditions.
• Abnormal blood test results that require assessment of the abdominal organs.
• Unexplained abdominal enlargement, weight loss or a palpable lump.
• Monitoring of a previously identified condition, as recommended by your doctor.

Sudden severe abdominal pain, bleeding from the digestive tract or inability to pass urine requires urgent medical assessment. Do not wait for a routine ultrasound appointment in these circumstances.

How to prepare for an abdominal ultrasound

Confirm your preparation instructions when booking, as they depend on the scope of the examination. You will usually be asked not to eat for about 6 hours before the scan. Drink still water as instructed. A full bladder may be needed if the urinary bladder is included in the examination.

• Bring previous test results and records relevant to your symptoms.
• Do not stop taking regular medicines on your own.
• If you have diabetes, are pregnant or find fasting difficult, arrange individual preparation advice.
• Wear clothing that allows easy access to your abdomen.

What happens during the scan, and what does the result mean?

You lie on an examination couch. The doctor applies gel and moves a probe over your abdomen. You may be asked to change position or briefly hold your breath. We use a GE LOGIQ E10 ultrasound system. Pressure over a painful area may cause temporary discomfort.

The report should be interpreted alongside your symptoms and other test results. A normal ultrasound does not rule out every abdominal condition. It does not replace gastroscopy, colonoscopy or a detailed gynaecological assessment. Your doctor will advise on further investigations and any follow-up scan.
