Contraceptive implant

Implanon NXT is a subdermal contraceptive implant, which takes around 5 minutes to insert. It is particularly suitable for women who value their convenience and who do not want to remember to take a pill every day. It is also an option for those who want to save money.

• The implants contain a slow-releasing progestogen and are placed under the skin of the non-dominant upper arm.
• The implant releases the hormone, which enters the bloodstream through the surrounding tissues and is then distributed throughout the body.
• The implant have contraceptive effectiveness for 3 years.
• Implant placement requires a surgical procedure.
• The implant can be inserted on any day of the menstrual cycle if pregnancy has first been ruled out. It can also be removed at any time.
• Contraceptive protection is effective from the time of insertion if the implant is placed within the first seven days of the menstrual cycle; if the implant is placed at any other time, additional protection must be applied for 7 days.

Contraindications

Contraindications to the use of the contraceptive implant:

• thrombophlebitis or venous thromboembolism,
• acute liver disease,
• liver tumours (benign and malignant),
• unexplained uterine bleeding,
• severe hypersensitivity to any component of the implant.

After the method is discontinued, fertility returns very soon. Regular ovulatory cycles occur within a month and the number of pregnancies during the first year after the implant is removed is comparable to the number of pregnancies in women who did not use any contraceptive method in order to get pregnant. Implantation duration also has no effect on the number of pregnancies or their outcome.

Implants are a perfect solution for sexually active women who need a permanent, long-lasting and effective method of contraception, who want to postpone the decision about having a child for 2-3 years or who forget to take a pill every day, or who have experienced oestrogen-related side effects when taking DTA.
