Nasal cautery is one option for treating recurrent bleeding from the front of the nose. It may be considered when an ENT specialist identifies an accessible bleeding point and decides that local treatment is appropriate.
At Tartaczna 2 Medical Centre in Gdańsk, we use chemical cauterisation with a silver-based preparation. Assessment and treatment are provided by Dr Agnieszka Kasprzyk-Tryk, an ENT and paediatric ENT specialist.
Bleeding often comes from small blood vessels in the front of the nasal septum. Dryness, nose picking, forceful nose blowing and local inflammation can contribute. Other factors include injury, medicines that affect clotting and bleeding disorders.
Recurrent nosebleeds need an assessment of their cause. Not every nosebleed requires cautery: advice on moisturising and protecting the nasal lining may be enough, while some patients need further investigations.
Seek urgent medical help if bleeding continues after 10–15 minutes of correct pressure, is heavy, or is accompanied by weakness, difficulty breathing or a significant injury. For a life-threatening emergency in Poland, call 112 or 999. Do not wait for a routine clinic appointment.
The doctor examines the nasal cavity and identifies the bleeding point. A chemical preparation is then applied precisely to the selected area to seal the bleeding vessel. Surface anaesthesia and the extent of treatment are chosen according to the clinical situation.
The procedure usually takes a few minutes. Stinging, burning or temporary discomfort may occur, and a crust can form as the area heals. Bleeding from deeper inside the nose, or a bleeding point that cannot be seen, may require another approach, including nasal packing or hospital treatment.
The ENT specialist assesses the bleeding site, the nasal lining and the child's ability to cooperate. Treatment is chosen according to the examination findings and the child's needs. There is no single approach suitable for everyone, and cautery cannot guarantee that nosebleeds will never recur.
Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own. Blood tests are arranged when indicated by the medical history or examination.
For the period advised by your doctor, avoid blowing or picking your nose, removing crusts, strenuous exercise, hot baths and saunas. Use any recommended nasal care products as instructed.
Possible complications include local irritation, pain, recurrent bleeding and, rarely, damage to the nasal septum. Worsening symptoms or recurrent nosebleeds require review; heavy bleeding needs urgent medical attention.
When booking with Dr Agnieszka Kasprzyk-Tryk, give the patient's age and explain that the appointment is for recurrent nosebleeds or assessment for nasal cautery.
