When should you see an ENT doctor?

A consultation can help identify the cause of symptoms such as:

• recurrent sore throats, tonsillitis or persistent hoarseness,
• ongoing nasal blockage, a runny nose, changes in smell or sinus symptoms,
• nosebleeds,
• ear pain, reduced hearing, tinnitus or ear discharge,
• snoring, mouth breathing or suspected pauses in breathing during sleep,
• changes in the mouth, swallowing difficulties or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck.

Some symptoms need prompt attention: sudden hearing loss should be assessed urgently, ideally within 24 hours. Breathing difficulties or heavy, persistent bleeding require emergency care rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Paediatric ENT consultations in Gdańsk

Common reasons for an ENT appointment in children include recurrent ear and throat infections, hearing difficulties, suspected enlarged adenoids, snoring and mouth breathing. The doctor assesses the symptoms and recommends care according to the child's age and examination findings.

The consultation can also include an assessment of tongue-tie. The appearance of the frenulum alone does not determine whether a procedure is needed; its effect on tongue movement and function matters. Depending on the difficulty, input from a speech and language therapist or lactation consultant may be helpful.

ENT examination and further investigations

The consultation includes a discussion of symptoms, previous treatment and other medical conditions, followed by an examination of the relevant areas of the head and neck. Depending on the indication, the doctor may assess the ears and eardrums, nose, mouth, throat, tonsils and larynx.

If further hearing tests, imaging or laboratory investigations are needed, you will receive appropriate recommendations. Samples for selected swabs and tests can be collected at our laboratory collection point. Not every inflammatory condition requires a culture or antibiotic treatment.

ENT procedures and treatment

• Tongue-tie release – following an assessment of tongue function and the indications for treatment.
• Nasal cautery – an option for selected nosebleeds when the bleeding point can be identified.
• Assessment and treatment of chronic sinusitis – including treatment selection and advice on whether further investigations or surgery may be needed.
• Removal of impacted earwax – after examining the ear canal and eardrum. Ear discharge or a suspected perforated eardrum needs assessment and may rule out irrigation.

The doctor decides after examination whether a procedure can be performed in the clinic. If hospital care or another specialist's assessment is needed, you will receive advice on the next steps.

Preparing for your ENT appointment

Bring previous test results, imaging reports and a list of medicines. For a child's consultation, information about infections, sleep, breathing and any hearing or feeding difficulties is useful. Do not stop medicines without discussing this with your doctor.
