Genetic Testing

At Tartaczna 2 Medical Centre in Gdańsk, we offer genetic testing to support prenatal care, pregnancy planning and the assessment of inherited predispositions to selected conditions. We also provide molecular tests used in cancer screening and the diagnosis of infections.

What genetic tests do we offer?

• NIFTY – a non-invasive prenatal screening test using a maternal blood sample to assess the risk of selected chromosomal conditions in the baby.
• NIFTY Premium – an expanded prenatal screening package covering selected chromosomal conditions and single-gene disorders. The scope and limitations of each part of the package should be discussed before testing.
• Cancer Screen and ONKOprofil – tests for inherited predispositions to selected cancers, including breast, ovarian, prostate and pancreatic cancer. The genes analysed depend on the panel.
• VISTA – carrier screening for selected inherited conditions, intended for people planning a pregnancy. It helps assess the risk of having a child with a genetic condition; depending on the findings, testing your partner may also be needed.
• VeniSafe – testing for selected genetic variants associated with the risk of venous thrombosis. The reasons for testing and the meaning of the results should be discussed with a doctor.
• NutriFit – analysis of selected genetic predispositions related to metabolism and nutrition. It does not replace an assessment of your diet or tests for nutritional deficiencies.

We also offer genetic testing for hereditary haemochromatosis, selected forms of inherited thrombophilia and genetic causes of male infertility. Testing is selected according to clinical indications. Routine thrombophilia screening is not recommended for every woman before starting combined oral contraceptives.

Other molecular tests

• COLOTECT – a screening test that uses a stool sample to analyse changes in DNA methylation associated with colorectal cancer. A positive result requires further investigation with a colonoscopy. A negative result does not rule out cancer or replace a medical assessment if you have concerning symptoms.
• Tests for genital infections – detection of genetic material from microorganisms, including Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, selected Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma species, and human papillomavirus (HPV). The choice of tests and interpretation of results depend on clinical indications. Detecting a microorganism does not always mean that a condition requiring treatment is present.

These tests serve different purposes from testing for inherited disease predispositions.

Choosing a genetic test and understanding the results

The choice of test depends on the reason for testing, your health, previous results and your family medical history. Our doctors can help you select appropriate tests and understand the results. Where necessary, they may recommend a consultation with a clinical geneticist.

A screening result is not a definitive diagnosis. A NIFTY result indicating an increased risk requires a consultation and confirmation with an appropriate diagnostic test. NIFTY does not replace prenatal ultrasound or rule out all genetic conditions and birth defects.

Identifying an inherited cancer predisposition does not mean that you currently have cancer or will definitely develop it. Equally, a negative panel result does not rule out all inherited causes or eliminate the risk of cancer. Further recommendations take both the results and your family history into account.

At Tartaczna 2 Medical Centre, samples can be collected without an appointment during the following hours:

• Monday to Friday: 08:00–12:00,
• Saturday: 09:00–12:00.
