Non-invasive prenatal testing – NIFTY testing

NIFTY Plus test

Table of Contents

    What is the NIFTY test?

NIFTY is a non-invasive prenatal screening test (NIPT). It analyses cell-free DNA in the pregnant woman's blood to assess the risk of selected chromosomal conditions, primarily trisomies 21, 18 and 13, associated with Down, Edwards and Patau syndromes. Pregnancy-related DNA comes mainly from the placenta.

The test requires approximately 10 ml of maternal venous blood. No needle is inserted into the uterus and no amniotic fluid is collected. Usual blood collection effects, such as brief discomfort or bruising, may occur.

What does NIFTY screen for, and what are its limitations?

The scope depends on the package selected. In addition to common trisomies, it may include selected sex chromosome conditions, trisomies 9, 16 and 22, deletion and duplication syndromes, and information about fetal sex. We describe NIFTY Premium separately.

Test performance varies between conditions. A single sensitivity or accuracy figure should not be applied to every condition or test option. The benefits and limitations of expanded panels for rare changes should be discussed with a doctor; these panels are not recommended as routine screening for every pregnancy.

NIFTY is not a diagnostic test. A high-risk result requires consultation and confirmation through an appropriate diagnostic test. A low-risk result does not exclude all genetic conditions or developmental abnormalities. NIPT does not replace recommended ultrasound scans.

    When can NIFTY be performed?

Testing is available from week 10 of pregnancy. Timing and package selection depend on the clinical situation. In twin pregnancies, confirm the availability and scope of a suitable option, which may differ from testing in a singleton pregnancy.
