


One of the key diagnostic methods in oncological dermatology is a skin biopsy, which allows detailed examination of skin tissue. This procedure is essential in diagnosing a wide range of conditions, from precancerous lesions and skin cancers to connective tissue diseases and dermatoses with characteristic histological features.
A skin biopsy can be performed using different techniques depending on the diagnostic indication. Available methods include a punch biopsy, in which a special circular instrument is used to remove a small cylindrical sample of skin, a shave biopsy, in which a superficial layer of tissue is removed, as well as incisional biopsy and excisional biopsy, which allow a larger part of the lesion or the entire lesion to be removed. The choice of biopsy technique depends on the type and location of the skin lesion and the diagnostic objective.
A skin biopsy requires minimal preparation. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, making it essentially painless. A tissue sample is collected using a scalpel or a specialized instrument such as a punch biopsy tool. After the sample has been obtained, the wound may be closed with sutures, and the biopsy material is submitted for detailed microscopic examination.

After a skin biopsy, the patient can usually return to normal daily activities, although care should be taken around the biopsy site. The dressing should generally remain in place for the first 1–2 days. If sutures have been used, they are usually removed after approximately 7–14 days. Possible complications include scarring, infection or fainting, but these are uncommon and usually mild.
After a skin tissue sample has been collected, it is submitted for histopathological examination. This is a key stage of the diagnostic process, allowing the microscopic structure of the tissue to be assessed in detail and enabling an accurate diagnosis. Histopathology can identify malignant cells, inflammatory changes, infections and other pathological abnormalities.
Depending on the microscopic features of the tissue, the pathologist may determine the type of skin lesion, its biological characteristics and, in the case of malignant lesions, features relevant to further treatment planning.
The time required to obtain a histopathology result depends on the type and complexity of the examination. Each result includes a detailed description of the tissue findings and provides the basis for planning further treatment. Histopathological analysis provides information not only about the lesion itself but, where relevant, also about its relationship to surrounding tissue, which may be important when planning treatment of skin cancer.
