What Is an Excisional Biopsy?

An excisional biopsy is a diagnostic surgical procedure in which the entire suspicious lesion is removed and submitted for histopathological examination. It is commonly used in the diagnosis of suspicious skin lesions and moles, including lesions in which melanoma is suspected.

When melanoma is suspected, complete surgical excision of the lesion with an appropriate diagnostic margin is generally the preferred method whenever anatomically feasible. Histopathological examination of the removed tissue then allows the pathologist to determine the nature of the lesion and establish a definitive diagnosis.

How Is an Excisional Biopsy Performed?

At Tartaczna 2 Medical Centre, excisional biopsies and minor surgical procedures are performed under local anaesthesia on an outpatient basis, so hospital admission is not required. The lesion is surgically removed and the wound is usually closed with sutures.

Depending on the location and extent of the procedure, sutures are generally removed after approximately 7–14 days. The removed tissue is always submitted for histopathological examination.
