Gynecological appointment and consultation
Gynaecological consultation in Gdańsk
A medical consultation is the first and most important step in assessing a patient and in the subsequent treatment process. During the consultation, the doctor carries out a medical assessment.
A gynaecology consultation concerns every woman who visits a gynaecologist.
An obstetric consultation is distinctive because it concerns both the woman and her unborn child. During this consultation, the obstetrician-gynaecologist therefore looks after the woman’s health and the wellbeing of the embryo and, later, the fetus.
What happens during a gynaecological medical assessment?
Most patients associate a medical assessment only with physically examining the patient. Few realise that a medical assessment consists of two stages:
History taking — discussing your health
During history taking, the doctor reviews the patient’s medical history, current symptoms and test results. On the basis of this discussion and an analysis of the results, the doctor may make a preliminary diagnosis and request additional tests. In many cases, taking the history is sufficient to make diagnostic and treatment decisions. Statistical estimates identify it as the foundation of a medical consultation: history taking accounts for around 80% of the assessment, clinical reasoning and treatment decisions.
Objective assessment — the physical examination
This stage includes observing the patient and performing a physical examination, for example listening with a stethoscope, a gynaecological examination using a speculum, a digital rectal examination (per rectum), percussion, measuring blood pressure and measuring the patient’s weight.
The physical examination includes the procedures the doctor needs at that time to assess the patient’s health and address her medical problems. It is performed according to the patient’s needs, the nature of the appointment and the doctor’s specialty. A physical examination is not required at every outpatient visit. A consultation may also involve other activities, such as issuing a medical certificate, extending a sick note or writing a prescription.
On each occasion, the procedures performed during the appointment are decided by the doctor and the patient, who has come with a specific concern.
Other tests and procedures during a gynaecology consultation
The doctor may decide that additional tests or procedures are needed and extend the consultation accordingly. These additional procedures are always agreed with the patient, who first receives full information about their purpose.
Examples of additional procedures and tests that can be performed during a gynaecology or obstetric consultation include:
- transvaginal ultrasound (routinely performed during consultations at our centre);
- obstetric ultrasound;
- CTG monitoring;
- sample collection for LBC cytology, as well as all types of swabs and cultures;
- collecting samples for histopathological examination, such as an endometrial biopsy;
- vaccination, for example against HPV or whooping cough;
- interventional procedures;
- insertion and removal of intrauterine devices;
- aesthetic gynaecology procedures;
- insertion of contraceptive implants;
- pessary insertion.
